What is a bail bond?
A bail bond is a contract between a person accused of a crime and a bail bondsman. After a person is arrested, a judge may set a bail amount. Bail is the amount of money the court holds as a guarantee that the defendant will be present for all court appearances. Bail bondsmen pay the entire amount of a person's bail in return for a small fee.
How long does it take to be released from jail?
Release times vary from jail-to-jail. Release can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours.
What is collateral and why is it needed?
Collateral is anything of value that is used to financially secure a bail bond. Cash or property is the most common forms of collateral. However, under some circumstances, jewelry, cars and boats can be accepted.
When is the collateral returned?
Normally collateral is returned within 15 to 20 business days after the case is completely settled and the entire premium is paid. A disposition, signed by the judge is required.
